Skeletonized watches are popular right now, and named for the view (complete or partial) of the watch movement in the dial. Some skeletonized watches provide glimpses all the way through the watch, while others provide mere hints of the gears and mechanism which together power the watch. The reason skeletonized watches are popular is because they offer mechanical credibility. No one needs a mechanical watch, but its nice to know that your timepiece is a sophisticated piece of machinery, and there is no better way to show that than by actually showing you such machinery.
Orbita is a well regarded watch winder manufacturer here in the US, as many of you know. They recently released their Privee RX single watch winder to a limited number of people for a discounted price. I was eager to get my hands on one of these luxury watch winders as I could never pay the retail price of most luxury watch winders, which is in the several hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Now small shops and individual sellers have the ability to reach the widest of potential buyers. Pricing has been becoe competitive again, and new watches are being released with a new found fury. Let us not forget how much this has helped the mechanical watch revolution. There was a time, when all agreed that the mechanical watch was dead. With the inexpensive costs and reliability of the quartz movement, mechanical watches seemed to have no hope. Even though mechanical watches bounced back in the early 90s to an extent, I believe it was the advertising and distribution power of the internet that showed the greatest possible audience that mechanical watches had a value and pleasure of ownership above that of quartz watches which often seem to have a rather hollow and uninteresting soul.
Being 25 and into watches does not always go together. Watches are inherently very expensive, and the cost of admittance into the hobby can be overwhelming. It is a hobby and passion of appreciation and style. You have to appreciate the beautiful, recognize the handsome, and critique the flawed. Few of us are hands on in anyway. Meaning we do not fix or modify watches, not do we really understand the inner workings for the most part.
